Why is the idea if equality so
dangerous? For two core reasons, 1) it is an inherently anarchic idea, designed
to destroy all hierarchical institutions, including the church and the family, 2)
it stems directly from the original lie of the devil. As I note in something I
am writing,
“I
think Chaucer answered that for us above, it is a strategy for undermining
God’s Church and his order;
“but
in as much as the estate of Holy Church might not have come into being, nor the
common advantage kept, nor any peace and rest established on earth, unless God
had ordained that some men should have higher rank and some lower: therefore
was sovereignty ordained to guard and maintain and defend its underlings or its
subjects within reason and so far as lies in its power, and not to destroy or
to confound them.”[1]
If
you mess with the natural hierarchy ordained by God, you mess with the Church,
the family, and the national structures which protect these life-giving
institutions. Anarchy is the end game, because Locke, Hobbes and the medieval
jurists were right, if everyone is levelled then anarchy will ensue, not
because everyone is equal, but because the natural result of levelling is
disorder. Egalitarianism is disorder dressed up as a gift and we are
experiencing the repercussions of it every day in the West as our society
becomes further and further decivilized.
The
reason we are obsessed with equality is that humanity has an enemy, a real,
spiritual and wicked enemy, that worked out long ago, if you want to destroy
humanity, you barely have to lift a finger. All you have to do is convince
everyone that they are owed more, and they have every right to take it, “4 But
the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that
when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing
good and evil” (Genesis 3:4-5). It is the original temptation, and it still
wreaks havoc today. We are obsessed with equality, because our society believes
the devils lie that the utopian greatness it offers us is possible. Unless we
oppose this very clever deception, equalitarianism will continue to degrade our
society.”
Society was designed to function in
hierarchy. This hierarchy gives the world structure, meaning, stability, and
also distinction. Equality is designed to break all of this, as Nicholas Berdyaev
notes,
“From
inequality was born also the world, the cosmos. From inequality was also born
man. An absolute equality would have left being in an unrevealed condition, in
undistinctness, i.e. non-being. The demand for absolute equality is the demand
for a return back to the initial chaotic and dark condition, all level and
undifferentiated, which too is a demand for non-being. The revolutionary demand
for a return back to equality in non-being is begotten of the lack of desire to
bear up under sacrifices and sufferings, through which leads the path to an
higher life. This is indeed a very terrible reaction, a denial of the meaning
of all the whole creative world process. The pathos of revolution -- is a
reactionary pathos. The coercive demand for equality, issuing forth from the
bottoms of the chaotic darkness, is an attempt at the destruction of the cosmic
hierarchical structure, formed by the creative birth of light in the darkness,
an attempt at destruction also of the human person itself, as an hierarchical
step, as having been born of inequality. Thus transpires the encroachment upon
the royal place of man in the cosmic structure. And it is because this place
has been acquired by a terrible inequality and process of separation. The
demand for equality can be expanded also downwards, towards the non-human rungs
of cosmic life. In the levelling rush there is always thrust upwards not the
human, the essentially already aristocratic principles, but rather the lower
subhuman principles in man himself, elementary elements, the elementary spirits
of nature. In all the communistic mass movements there is always sensed
something non-human, some lower elements of nature rearing their head,
obstructive to the revealing of the human image in the masses themselves.
Differentiating a light needs ultimately to be brought into the darkness of
your confusions. The pathos for equality is a jealous envy towards a being
alien to one, the incapacity to advance one's own particular being without
glancing at one's neighbour. Inequality however permits of affirming the being
Of everyone, independent of the other. Ye levellers unto non-being, ye love to
make use of even Christianity for your aims, ye are not loathe even to resort
to the Gospel, in which ye do not believe…”[2]
The pursuit of equality is essentially
a pursuit to go back to the chaotic nothingness of inexistence. Because only in
that chaotic nothingness can true equality ever exist. Inequality is defined by
distinction. Creation is defined by distinction, therefore inequality is an
intrinsic part of creation and equality is an intrinsic part of uncreation, or chaos and destruction. The
pursuit of absolute equality is the pursuit of destruction. The Bible, Chaucer
and Berdyaev agree, equality is dangerous.
When a building is levelled, it is far more equal than when it stands, but it
is no longer a building, but rubble. This is what the equalitarians are doing
to our society.
