It is very illustrative to consider just how consistent evil is throughout the millennia. I guarantee that a 23-year-old post-graduate student sitting on an abortion table, because she does not want to lose access to internship she was just accepted into, does not consider herself to have anything in common with the ancient Canaanite mother who passes her children through the fires of Molech. It is even likely she has never heard of the Canaanites. But not only does she have a lot in common, the common threads in their respective actions are uncanny. Here is a passage from something else that I am writing,
“These demons would require more and more of people, and the
more a society was given over to them, the more depraved the sacrifices became,
“34 They did not destroy the peoples, as the Lord commanded
them, 35 but they mixed with the nations and learned to do as they did. 36 They
served their idols, which became a snare to them. 37 They sacrificed their sons
and their daughters to the demons; 38 they poured out innocent blood, the blood
of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and
the land was polluted with blood. 39 Thus they became unclean by their acts,
and played the whore in their deeds.”[1]
If you think it is inconceivable that people would offer up
their children for some kind of nefariously sourced power, consider that this
is in essence what abortion is all about in our modern era.
Abortion, which is in reality infanticide, or murder, is the
act of offering up your child for power. It may be very simply the desire of a
woman to remain independent, or to be able to continue in some career, or even
just the desire to protect her public reputation or that of her family,
something which is not unheard of in evangelical families. In all of these
cases the child is being sacrificed so that the mother, father, family, or some
combination of all involved can have some power over their destiny that they
would not have if they were made to keep the child. The ancients who traded
their first-born sons or daughters for better crop yields, or favour in war,
would have felt that this was no less tangible, and no less profitable than a
modern person seeking an abortion for better career placement and
opportunities. I suspect that since human nature has not really changed all
that much over the millennia, many of those ancient people would have done it
with just as much mixed emotion as modern people do. Which in no way excuses how terrible
it is.”
In fact, it
condemns those who practiced it even more, because their consciences bore
witness that what they were doing was wrong. One of the basic assumptions of sacrifice
is that you have to give up something of value for something else you value
even more. So those parents who gave up their children were giving up something
important to them, but in their twisted thinking and logic, whatever it was
they were seeking was more important. This is fundamentally evil reasoning and wicked practice, and it is no different to modern people today who sacrifice
parenthood through abortion for a university degree and then a third-rate career, and a moderate house and car. The same kind of reasoning is involved,
showing the same kind of evil is at work. The devil has no new tricks because
the old ones still work.
