Former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating has told it
like it is:
“Australia’s participation
in the Aukus defence pact risks handing military control of the country to
Washington and becoming the “51st state of the United States”, according to
former prime minister Paul Keating.
Speaking on ABC’s 7.30 on Thursday night, Keating argued that Australia had made itself a target for aggression by joining the military alliance with the US and the UK in implicit opposition to China’s growing power in the Asia Pacific region.
Australia had no quarrel
with China, Keating said, and concerns about China’s designs on Taiwan were not
justified because the island was “Chinese real estate”.
“Taiwan is not a vital
Australian interest,” he said, adding that the American attitude to Taiwan was
like China deciding that Tasmania needed help to secede from Australia.
“What Aukus is about in the
American mind is turning [Australia into suckers], locking us up for 40 years
with American bases all around…not Australian bases,” he said.
“So Aukus is really about,
in American terms, the military control of Australia. I mean, what’s happened…
is likely to turn Australia into the 51st state of the United States.”[1]
He's right. He is so right.
Australia does not have any quarrel with China, and America does want to lock us into a military partnership to their advantage. Because of its situation the US is seeking to sure up its satrapies to strengthen its hold on dominance. The United States is rapidly falling behind China. China has surpassed the United States in industry base, it is starting to overtake it technologically, it far outweighs the US in population, and has a far less aggressive record towards other nations. Something which is just a fact, but many westerners can’t process this well because they have been propagandized to believe all or many of the United States wars of aggression were wars of defense against global threats. They were not, they were about extending US power across the globe and using aggression to enforce their will on the unwilling.
What is really interesting is that Keating is even
willing to point this out,
“‘We’re now defending the
fact that we’re in Aukus,’ Keating told the show’s presenter Sarah Ferguson.
“If we weren’t in Aukus, we wouldn’t need to defend it. If we didn’t have an
aggressive ally like the United States – aggressive to others in the region –
there’d be nobody attacking Australia. We are better left alone than we are
being ‘protected’ by an aggressive power like the United States.”[2]
Never a truer word was spoken. One could argue that we
owed the US some favours after they fought to defend Australian shores during
World War 2. But don’t forget they were also using Australia as a base of
operations, and they were largely defending their own presence in the region,
and it was British and US bases which Japan were most focused on targeting. So,
really it was a wash, we should call it even. Then when you add all the times that Australia has
followed the United States into disastrous war after disastrous war, you could
rightly point out that we have paid that debt (if any was owed) and now they owe us far more than
we ever owed in return. However, there are many British expats and indeed
Australians, who cannot give up the idea of British glory and empire, and
therefore are more than keen to see Australia acting on the world stage amongst
the major powers. When in reality we have no business playing in that league. We are a minor power at best, and should act like one.
Australia should be the Switzerland of the south seas. We
should mine our resources, be energy independent, and sell our surplus to any
who would buy it. However, Australia is torn between facing the reality of our
situation, and being stuck in a past when we were always the loyal auxiliaries
of a larger Anglo-Saxon power.
The aggression of the United States could put our country
in serious danger. It is good to see serious people presenting the truth about
this. Pray that those with the ability to make the decisions listen. It is not
in our interest to get aggressive with China, and it is not in our interest to
support the US doing it either.
